In 2008, UNESCO recognized Berat as a World Heritage Site, celebrating its rare example of well-preserved Ottoman architecture and the harmonious coexistence of different religious communities.

Founded as Antipatrea by the Illyrians, Berat served as an important fortress city controlling trade routes through the Osum River valley.

Under Byzantine rule, Berat became an important religious center with numerous churches and monasteries. The castle was significantly fortified during this period.

15th-20th Century - Ottoman Empire
